High School Principal Update
Kelly Heiss
Friday, March 26, 2021

Dear Fairbanks Families,

As you are aware, Mr. Montgomery will be retiring at the end of this school year. We are grateful for his time and contributions to the Fairbanks community.

With the announcement of his retirement, we embarked on a search for the next principal of Fairbanks High School. Early in the process, we met with staff and students to gather input and create a principal profile. This document provided an anchor for the interview process, allowing administrators and those on the committee to evaluate each candidate based on the attributes our school community expressed as priorities for the new principal.

There was an overwhelming response for the position. Sixty-two individuals submitted their qualifications.  Nineteen applicants were selected for a screener interview. From that pool, four were selected to be interviewed by a committee composed of twenty-two parents, students, staff and administrators. The committee provided feedback and recommendations on the candidates.

Driven by the recommendation of the interview committee, we are pleased to announce Janel Chapman has accepted our offer to be the next principal of Fairbanks High School.  Mrs. Chapman is currently the principal at North Union High School.  She comes to our district with experience as a school counselor in Marysville Exempted Village Schools.   She was a classroom teacher in both  South-Western City Schools, Jonathan Alder Local Schools, and West Geauga School District.  We are excited to bring Mrs. Chapmanā€™s  expertise and experience to Fairbanks Local Schools.

Mrs. Chapman has been presented with an offer and signed a letter of intent with our district. She will be recommended on the April 19, 2021 regular board meeting agenda for approval by the Fairbanks Board of Education. Following the board meeting, we will begin developing a transition plan.

I want to extend my gratitude first to Mr. Montgomery for his service to our school. I also want to thank our interview committee for their commitment  and service to our district through this process. We are excited to welcome Mrs. Chapman to Fairbanks Local Schools!

For Fairbanks,

Adham Schirg
