Fairbanks Local Schools is a community-minded district that is committed to providing all students with an innovative and rigorous education.

In order to fulfill this mission, Fairbanks staff members embrace professional learning and collaboration. We are engaged in continued discussion of the following questions as part of our professional collaboration and work to increase student achievement:

  • What do we want students to know, understand, and be able to do in each course or curricular area?
  • How do we best assess student learning for each course or curricular area?
  • How do we use the assessment data to personalize learning for each of our students?
  • How can the use of technology enhance our instruction in the classroom and assist with meeting each student's individual needs?

In January of 2017, Fairbanks Local will begin our 1:1 initiative, rolling out chromebooks to our freshman students. These chromebooks will be assigned to each individual student and will be able to be taken back and forth from school to home. In addition, our 3rd, 4th and 5th grade classrooms have enough devices for each student to have access to a chromebook at any time. In preparation for this rollout, our staff members have been engaging in rigorous and ongoing professional development to learn how to best implement a BALANCED learning model in their classrooms. This means learning to balance work on the devices along with other instructional methods in each classroom. The use of technology and devices helps us to gather consistent data on student progress and personalize learning for each of our students. The use of adaptive programming in some grade levels has our students working at their exact learning level during the course of each school day. The data that is being collected by our teachers through assessment and the use of the programming allows us to constantly monitor student growth. Each new school year will continue the 1:1 rollout to include more grade levels with the three year goal of each student having a device.
