New Student Lunches

Last week's new student picnics were a success! Thankfully, the rain and cool weather held off so we could enjoy several nice picnics outside. Almost 40 new students attended the picnics and got to meet the other new students in their grades.

Welcome Back!

Welcome back for another great school year! Our character education program for this year is based on John Wooden's pyramid of success and his children's book, "Inch and Miles: The Journey to Success". Character words for September as we begin this "journey to success" are HARD WORK & ENTHUSIASM! Please feel free to let me know if your child is working hard or showing enthusiasm at home and I would be happy to reward him or her here at school.

End of the year guidance lessons...

I am concluding my classroom guidance lessons in each classroom this week and next week by reviewing the 7 habits of a growing leader that we have emphasized all year. Students are playing a Smartboard game in which they get to guess letters to fill in the letters in each habit name. It is a great way to reinforce the habits and fun for the kids too! Please encourage your children to continue to be growing leaders this summer at home and in the community!

For more information on the 7 habits and/or interactive computer games that the kids can play at home, please visit: http://www.seancovey.com/kids.html

Summer Safety Tips to Teach Kids

1. Always check first with your parents, guardians, or the trusted adult in charge before you go anywhere or do anything. Be sure to check in regularly with your parents, guardians, or a trusted adult when you're not with them.
2. Always take a friend with you when playing or going anywhere. It's safer and more fun.
3. Don't be tricked by people who offer you special treats or gifts. Never accept anything from anyone without your parents' or guardians' permission.
4. Stay safer when you're home alone by keeping the door locked, not opening the door for or talking to anyone who stops by unless the person is a trusted family friend or relative, you feel comfortable being alone with that person, and the visit has been pre-approved by your parents or guardians; and never telling anyone who calls that you're home by yourself.
5. Don't go into a public restroom by yourself.
6. Never go alone to malls, movies, or parks. Take a friend with you, and always check first with your parents or guardians to make sure it's OK.
7. Don't panic if you feel lost. Identify the safest place to go or person to ask for help in reuniting with your parents or guardians.
8. Be careful when you play. Stay away from pools or creeks unless you are with a trusted adult. Don't play near busy streets or deserted areas.
9. Don't wear clothes or carry items with your name on the outside, and don't be confused just because a person you don't know calls out your name.
10. Never take a ride with someone without checking first with your parents or guardians.
