Tax Exempt form for Certified Teachers

As a certified teacher in Ohio, you are exempt from paying taxes on computers and computer equipment if it is used for academic work. I've attached the form that you need to provide to the vendor (and keep a copy for your records.)

Currently the District has agreements to provide Microsoft Office (Mac and PC) and Sophos Antivirus to staff members for no cost. Please stop by the Tech Department for agreement details.

Progress Book Training Videos

These items are available in the State's iTunes U server via iTunes.

You can watch the videos on your computer via iTunes or download them onto your iPod as well.

ELMO Document Cameras

The District has purchased 3 document cameras for classroom use. They can be checked out via your building Media Center. Training will be offered throughout the year. Document Cameras (also called ELMOs) work like an updated version of your old overhead projector. Instead of using special makers or pre-prepared transparencies, you can use any object (2-d or 3-d) that will fit on the tray.

In order to take advantage of the Document Camera you will need at least a computer projector in your room. A computer and Smartboard are not required but can be integrated if available.

I've attached a lesson idea guide to this post.

SMARTBoard Jeopardy

SMARTBoard Jeopardy

Download file "SMART_Jeopardy.notebook"

Attached is an easy to customize Jeopardy Template for your SMARTBoard. The default file is geared to training teachers about SMARTBoards, but with a few modifications it can be customized to any subject.

SMARTBoard Quiz Show
The template is actually 56 slides that are inter-linked. The first slide contains the game board and the slides at the end contain the scoreboard and the Daily Double template slide.

Slides 2-6 represent the "Answers" of the first column from 100 to 500, Slides 7-11 contain the second column, etc.

The "Question" slides start at 21 and continue in the same manner.

Here's how to customize the game. Don't forget that the Jeopardy host provides the Answers, the contestants provide the Questions

  1. File > Save As > Your Subject-Jeopardy. This will keep your original file "clean"
  2. Rename the categories (1st row): Double-Click on the text of each box and overwrite the default text.
  3. Double click on the first 100 point question (This will jump you to slide 2)
  4. Double Click on the original Yellow Text and add your own Answer. Remember, each slide can contain, text, pictures, movies, and / or sound. There is a navigation bar at the bottom of each of these slides, please make sure that the navigation bar on each page remains visible.
  5. Click the Answer link on the bottom of the slide to jump to the slide that you can enter the correct question.
  6. Double Click on the original Yellow Text and add your own Question. Remember, each slide can contain, text, pictures, movies, and / or sound. There is a navigation bar at the bottom of each of these slides, please make sure that the navigation bar on each page remains visible.
  7. Click on the Back link to jump back to the Main Board.
  8. Click Save :-)
  9. Repeat steps 1-8 until all spaces have been modified.

Playing the Game:

Divide your class into teams. The default template is set up for 3 teams, but you can easily modify it to your needs. I would recommend keeping the total number of teams under 6. Give each team a bell or buzzer. Decide whether each group answers as team or as individuals. Have team members rotate the buzzer and bell after each question.

Remember, according to Jeopardy rules, the contestant must answer in the form of a question. Correct questions will earn you points, wrong questions will deduct points. (You can decide not penalize incorrect Questions.)

Daily Double (optional)

You can pick one of your squares to be a Daily Double. For those unfamiliar with the Daily Double, Teams can wager up to 100% of their points on a harder question. If they win, they gain the wagered amount, otherwise they lose that amount.

To activate the Daily Double

  1. Right Click on the desired Square
  2. Choose Unlock from the popup menu
  3. Right Click on the desired Square
  4. Choose Link from the popup menu
  5. Make the Link point to Slide 53
  6. Make sure that the Link is set to Object and not Corner
  7. Edit the Daily Double Question

Apple Learning Interchange (ALI)

This is placeholder text for your new blog entry. Replace it with your own.The Apple Learning Interchange (ALI) is a free online community that provides resources for teachers on a variety of topics. There is a strong focus on 21st Century Skills and integrating technology and multimedia into your classroom. The site can be a little overwhelming, but if you want to see best practices on managing a multimedia project from start to finish, it's a good place to explore. ALI also allows you to collaborate with other educators around the world, via message boards, groups, chat, and more. They have added a lot of podcasts in the past two years that highlight many of the national educational conferences, such as: NECC and FETC. If anyone is interested in exploring ALI, please stop by my office.
